Guy Fieri

Chef, restaurateur, New York Times Best-Selling author, and Emmy Award-winning host Guy Fieri is busy as ever! We caught up with him recently to learn more about his global travel adventures.

Q: Tell us what you’ve been up to lately.
It’s been non-stop! We’ve been traveling around the country and opened four restaurants this past fall – Guy’s Smokehouse in Louisville, Guy’s Foxwoods Kitchen+Bar in Connecticut, Guy’s Playa del Carmen Kitchen+Bar in Mexico, and Guy’s Philly Kitchen+Bar. Not to mention we just wrapped filming another season of Guy’s Grocery Games and we’re always checking out new spots for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I also released my sixth cookbook, Guy Fieri Family Food, this past October.

Q: Assuming you have some time in your busy schedule, where do you like to relax?
Our family has a ranch about two hours away from our home in Northern California and I head up there any chance I get.

Q: What is your favorite destination?
Italy. For me it’s about the food, the culture and the people. Did I mention the food? If I had to narrow it down – Florence and Venice are my top picks. If you time it right, Florence has the best truffles in the world. And Venice, well, you just can’t beat a city on the water.

Q: Where haven’t you traveled that you would like to go?
It was Argentina and I finally went to Buenos Aires this January for my birthday. After that, it’s South Africa. My wife Lori and I have been talking about going on safari for years, and I’ll be opening a restaurant there in 2017.

Q: What one item is a must-have when you travel?
Really good earbuds. It’s a great way to pass the time on a long flight and during layovers. It sounds cheesy, but good music puts you in a good mood.

Q: What is the most unusual gift you have brought home from one of your journeys?
I was on a trip with my son through Europe – 7 countries, 14 cities in 30 days – and I bought an antique Parmesan cheese wheel scale in Parma. This thing had to be shipped via freight and stands taller than me. Epic!

Q: What upcoming projects do you have on the horizon that you’d like your fans to know about?
I’m opening more restaurants in 2017, including ones in South Africa and Dubai, and as always, keep tuning in to Food Network for new episodes of Guy’s Grocery Games and more!
